The Man Behind the Mission:
How His Life and Legacy Inspired the Storytellers of Hope Project to Help Others Rediscover Joy, Hope, and a Passion for Life. Even in the face of death, Danny held unwavering faith that dreams could come true.
Danny Hawkins, my late husband, entered my life as a young American man in the most extraordinary way—but that’s a story for another time. Danny loved me with a steadfast, unconditional love that transformed my world. He devoted his life to serving others, uplifting the community, and cherishing his family in ways I had never experienced growing up.
In the photo above, he is pictured with a homeless woman in Baltimore. After we finished our lunch downtown that day, we crossed paths with her. Danny, with his characteristic kindness, invited her to join us for a meal. So, we sat down together again, shared another lunch, and spent time learning about each other’s lives. In that moment, we weren’t strangers—we were united by our shared humanity, respect, compassion, and a deep sense of community love.
My Story of Hope
The Inspiration Behind the Storytellers of Hope Project
Every journey has a beginning—here’s where mine started.
My experience with grief and death almost destroyed me. While battling cancer, abuse, child homelessness, and everything else in my life, faith had always been enough and unquestioned. I felt strong and under control. The day I lost my husband, however, my complete existence collapsed under me. At an early age, I lost my father. He was the only one to have loved me. After his passing, I lived under various types of abuse and neglect. Without extended family, my husband was not only my mate and best friend, he was the only adult to ever love, accept, and protect me, since my father's death.
My journey through grief and loss nearly broke me. For over two years, it felt like an endless storm consuming everything in its path. My world crumbled, like a wildfire burning through every part of me. Joy was a distant memory—I didn’t feel it for those two years. The only thing driving me was the need to support myself and my son. Honestly, I had no idea how to survive that kind of pain. Feeling utterly alone, I started talking to myself, seeking motivation. I even had “conversations” with my quiet cat. :-) But here’s the truth: God’s undeniable presence in past hardships stopped me from considering suicide. Amid my brokenness—angry, ashamed, disappointed, and hopeless—I turned to God. It wasn’t easy. Those raw conversations with Him became an exhausting, uphill battle. Yet, through them, I found the miracle I needed to survive. If you’re in a place of suffering, I want you to know: this pain won’t last forever. Light will return. Hope will come, followed by joy and small but powerful changes that spark growth. You’ll rediscover purpose and excitement for the life ahead—a life waiting to be written. Please, stay. Your story isn’t over yet. And if you need a reminder, visit me here. You’re not alone.

A Reflection on Living with Grief
Grief is one of life’s most difficult experiences, often leaving us feeling lost, overwhelmed, and disconnected. Yet, with time, compassion, and the right support, healing is possible. Building connections with others—whether through friends, family, or support groups—can create a safe space to share emotions, offering comfort in the knowledge that we are not alone in our pain. Spiritual practices such as meditation, prayer, or quiet reflection can also provide solace, fostering inner peace and a sense of connection to something greater. These moments of reflection help us honor the memory of those we’ve lost while encouraging us to explore new directions and rediscover meaning in life. Over time, this journey allows us to transform grief into resilience, empowering us to live with purpose and embrace the beauty of life once more.
